The ‘Consorcio para el desarrollo de aplicaciones para la Gestión Universitaria’ (CIXUG) in collaboration with the ‘Agencia para la Modernización Tecnológica de Galicia’ (Amtega), announces the XVII edition of the Award for the Best University Project with Open Source License with the aim of promoting and bringing Galician university students to open source software and the employment opportunities that can result from publishing or collaborating with open source projects.

Requirements and deadlines
Students interested in participating in this award should be aware that the requirements to be met by these works are: to have been carried out with an open source implementation of any programming language and to have the software developed during the project published under an open source licence among those recognised as such by the Free Software Foundation or the Open Source Initiative. Projects that make use of Open Source Hardware can also participate.
To participate in this award, those interested must follow all the steps required in the terms and conditions of the award before 6 September:
- Fill in the registration form.
- Submit a report (maximum 10 pages) explaining the specific aspects of the Open Source Software and public activity of the project. This script can be used for its realisation, and can be submitted on the registration form itself, or by e-mail before the closing date for registration.
Finalists and the resolution event
Once the deadline for the submission of applications has expired, the jury will select the finalists who will have to attend the award ceremony, to be held on 20 September. The finalists will have to make a short presentation of the work carried out in their project, with special emphasis on the Open Source aspects of their project, achievements, future perspectives...
This award aims not only to reward a technical good project, but also a good open source project. The evaluation criteria that the jury will take into account when making its decision are the following aspects:
- Public works activity level: Ongoing publication of work, whether using existing project mailing lists, public source code repositories or any other web media, such as personal blogs; collaboration with other open source projects, community building, etc., will be an asset.
- Proper use of a open licence: the correct choice of a open source licence and its subsequent application to the code of the project will be assessed.
- Project quality: design and implementation.
The Prize for the best University Project with Open Source License will have an initial financial endowment of 1.500€ thanks to the contribution of the ‘ Consorcio para el desarrollo de aplicaciones para la Gestión Universitaria (CIXUG) in the framework of the collaboration agreement signed with Amtega for the promotion and dissemination of open source software.
In addition, it is foreseen that this financial endowment can be extended up to a maximum of 750€ more in collaboration with other agents of the open source ecosystem in the university environment..
This initiative is part of Amtega's Open Source Software Action Plan within the lines of action to improve and enhance the mechanisms for training and dissemination of open source software among Galician citizens and in particular among university students.
